Caring for Your Pomeranian:
A Legacy of Love and Gentle Guidance

Pomeranians may be long-coated, but they’re surprisingly easy to care for—especially when raised with gentle consistency. Every puppy from me is lovingly trained from an early age to accept grooming, bathing, blow drying, and nail trimming. Your role is to continue this rhythm, so your Pom learns to trust and expect the same care from you.
Grooming Rituals: Brush weekly, and more often during shedding seasons.
Teach trust: comb behind the ears and gently brush the underparts while your Pom lies on their back.
Safe setup: use a non-slip grooming table blocked on three sides, or groom on your lap.
Nail trimming tip: right-handed?
Tuck your Pom under your left arm, hold the paw with your left hand, and trim with your right. Reverse if left-handed.Bathing & Trimming
Bath as needed, always blow dry completely.
Use suitable shampoo: Fidos puppy shampoo (soap-free) is ideal for young coats.
Trim feet to resemble neat cat paws.
Ear and rear care: gently trim around ears and clip the area around the anus for hygiene.
Low-maintenance option: if your Pom is a pet only, consider cutting (no clippers) the coat to a manageable length.
Seasonal Safety
Summer heat is dangerous: Poms are prone to heat stress. Keep them in air-conditioned comfort.
Cold is more tolerable, but extremes of any temperature are best avoided. Indoors is safest.
Feeding & Dental Health
No bones, especially cooked chicken bones.
Daily Dentabone helps maintain gum and tooth health.
Cut meat finely—Poms can choke on large chunks.
Toy safety: avoid toys with small parts that could lodge in the throat.
Emotional Wellbeing & Training
Poms thrive with their humans—they’ll become your shadow.
Start training young: they learn quickly and excel at obedience.
Discipline with kindness: a firm word is usually enough.
Socialize early: help your Pom accept visitors and other pets.
Big dog energy: they may be small, but they carry a lion’s heart.
Companionship Matters
Consider adopting two if you’re away often. Poms are pack animals and need connection.
Prevent loneliness: a companion helps reduce barking, boredom, and depression.
Yes, dogs feel deeply—they experience emotions just like we do.
Safe Spaces & Smart Transitions
Your puppy’s first environment shapes their sense of safety, routine, and trust.
The Puppy Pen
Puppies are raised indoors, in a dedicated puppy pen—the same space where they’re born. They do not roam the house freely. This protects them from germs and accidents, and teaches them structure.
Toilet training begins early: puppies learn to eliminate on newspaper-covered areas.
They sleep in their own bed and have plenty of toys for stimulation and comfort.
Why You Should Invest in a Puppy Pen
Provides security and comfort, like a den for their ancestral instincts.
Ensures rest and routine, especially during the transition to a new home.
Prevents accidents: toy puppies have tragically perished from running underfoot or chewing electrical cords.
Supports toilet training and gives you peace of mind.

Travel Safety
If flying: bring valid ID (e.g., driver’s licence) for airport staff to release your puppy.
If collecting in person: use a secure pet carrier—never let a puppy roam loose in a moving car. K-Mart offers affordable pet crates.
Arrival Timing, Diet & Ongoing Care
Your puppy’s journey to you is carefully timed for safety and comfort.
Diet & Tummy Care
Stick to the provided diet for at least the first two weeks.
If an upset tummy occurs, switch to the diet for sensitive stomachs.
Watch closely: if symptoms persist beyond 24 hours—or if your puppy seems listless, depressed, vomiting, or refuses food/water—visit your vet immediately.
Continued Care
Avoid exposure to other dogs or public areas until two weeks after the final vaccination.
Worming: Administer within two weeks of arrival. I use Troy liquid wormer.
Use a 1ml syringe, gently drop by drop into the side of the mouth.
Hold your puppy in your arms, back against your chest.
Grooming & Bathing
Brush and comb twice weekly.
Groom every few days to build trust.
Nail trimming as needed.
Bathing isn’t necessary if grooming is consistent and quality products are used.
Recommended shampoo: Fido’s Puppy & Kitten Soap-Free Shampoo
Common Sense for Raising Your Pom
Puppies need rest—don’t exhaust them with constant handling.
Toy puppies and young children must be supervised.
Choose toys with no small parts or removable eyes.
Provide fresh water at all times.
Avoid extreme weather and never leave a puppy in a closed car.
Use a pet carrier for car travel.
Lead train early and be cautious around large dogs.
Keep pesticides and toxic plants out of reach.
Fence off swimming pools.
Avoid bones, raw food, tinned food, and human food (e.g., grapes, chocolate).
Pee pads are fine unless chewed—remove immediately if torn.
